Four generations of Styers to race Great

grandfather, 70, and 1

By BRIAN WESTFALL

Press Enterprise Writer

BERWICK -- Fred Styer had thoughts of running in last year's Run for the Diamonds, but a bout

with cancer sidetracked those plans.

Now that the 70-year-old is recovering, he's going to join his son and two grandsons in today's

race.

Even Styer's great-grandson, 1-year-old Keegan France, will start the race, giving the Styers

four generations of competitors. Bill Bull, whose been involved with the Run for the Diamonds

for many years, didn't think four generations of a family have ever competed in the event at the

same time.

"Steve (Fred's son) and his boys (Brad and Andy) have been running for years," Styer said. "I

thought I'd like to run with them, but last year I couldn't.

"I thought if I'm ever going to do it, now was the time."

Styer has been getting ready for the race with Steven, who offered to train with him so he didn't

have to do it by himself.

"We've been walking," Steven said. "We've done close to nine miles a couple times in training."

Although Styer has no intentions of keeping up with his two grandsons, both of whom are

accomplished runners, he has his sights set on the finish line.

"The first time we went out seven miles, I was pretty tired and my feet were sore," the Korean

War Army veteran said. "Now I'm in a little better shape. I've been doing eight miles with no

problems."

Styer checked with his doctor before entertaining the idea of competing, and admitted, "I won't

set any speed records" in the race.

"I won't go full throttle and I won't be going for any prize," he said. "I'm hoping to get in about two

hours; that's not really much more than a walk."

Keegan, meanwhile, may not even run for two minutes.

"He's going to start," Steven said. "He'll just run as far as he wants to."

Steven said the family considered carrying Keegan around the entire course, "but it is going to

be too cold," he said.

A 1971 Southern graduate, Steven was the first member of the family to compete in the Run for

the Diamonds and has been joined by Andy and Brad in the past few years. Steven ran track

while in high school, competing at the one and two-mile distances.

Andy, 22, who just graduated from Lebanon Valley, and Brad, 21, who attends Lock Haven, are

both seasoned cross-country runners and may provide a race within the family.

"There is always a lot of competition between us," Andy said. "Brad's been injured and hasn't

been able to train, but we're always very competitive in running."

With Brad recovering from a broken arm, Andy has staked his claim as the top runner in the

family.

"Andy will probably do pretty well," said Steven. "The rest of us are just hoping to have fun."

Andy tuned up for the nine-mile course with an impressive showing at the Steamtown

Marathon in Scranton last month. He finished 32nd out of 1,318 runners in his first marathon,

finishing the course in 2:53:30, fast enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

"I was happy with the time, but I can still improve on it," said Andy.

The Run for the Diamonds, Andy said, is different from the Steamtown Marathon.

"This race is a lot faster overall -- a lot quicker," he said. "I'm looking to run well, around 53

minutes for the race. I'm not really worried about placing, just trying to do my best."

Both Andy and Brad have completed the race in less than an hour.

Steven completed the race in 75:20, but he plans to stay with his father this time.

"Steve said he'd stay with me, but he doesn't have to," Fred said.

Andy and Brad, Fred added with a laugh, will "probably be waiting for us (at the finish line)."

With Thanksgiving dinner planned for 2 p.m. at the Styers', "We're just hoping to get home in

time for dinner," Steven said.

"It'll be great to see my nephew and grandfather out there and everyone enjoying running more

and more, including my father," Andy said. "It's something both Brad and I have been enjoying

for some time now."

The Results:

According to Uncle Fred, he came in about fourth place (from the end!) with a time of about two hours.   Steve faithfully tagged along with him, but Andy placed first in his division (see the 20-24 year old list in the article below.)  Poor Keegan had done fine running half miles at home, but with the thousands of runners and a large TV camera man running along in front of him getting footage, Keegan just stopped running and wondered what was going on.   Maybe next year!
