Some Photos 2014

A winter of snow.

At the January Math Meetings in Baltimore, the kids loved visiting the Baltimore Aquarium.

Science Fair

The kids enjoy building with Widgets, and David especially loves to play battles with his Playmobile knights and Vikings.

Daniel and David like baseball.

Visiting my mom at Easter.

The zoo is always fun.

A story Daniel wrote  inspired by Winnie the Pooh (first grade)

The Bear and the Honey

Once upon a time there was a bear.  He went to get honey.  He climbed up the honey tree but he fell down into a bush.  No thorns, good.

He got out of the bush.  He thought of a different way to get honey.  He knew!  He built wings to go on  his arms. He flew up.

But this time he swallowed some bees.   They were awful.  He was trying to get bees out of his mouth and his ears.  Then the bees flew after him.  He broke a wing and fell into the mud.  He got out.  He did not get their honey.

So he went to the grocery store to buy honey.  They said “No Bears Allowed”.   Too late! He had eaten honey in the grocery store and then brought some home.

Be careful with statistics!

At Vacation Bible School this summer, my son Daniel heard about the problems of dirty water in India, and how every six seconds a child dies from dirty water.  He came home very concerned  and wanted to give his money to the cause; he told us that in India a child drinks dirty water and six seconds later he dies.

Joe graduated in June.

Joe married Wei Wu in August.

We then visited friends and relatives in Ohio, staying at Lake Hope (here is Old Man's Cave Lower Falls).

We enjoyed our Philadlephia zoo membership, the kids especially enjoyed the rides.

We visited Joe and Wei in Richmond Va for a few days, enjoying hiking and a country festival.

We sometimes have a fire in our back yard.  One day Daniel showed Peggy a book he made, with the title "How to make a fire." (eight pages)

How to make a fire, by Daniel Styer

(Now) Here's what you need: matches, sticks, firepit, newspaper, and maybe oil.  First you put in sticks in the fire pit.  Next you put newspaper under the firepit.  Last you light the newspaper and that's how you make a fire.  Enjoy!  (following are hotdogs and hamburgers and marshmallow pictures.)

And here is a cute story David wrote for one of his classes. pdf
