Zum 75ten Geburtstag meiner Mutter, Waltraud Volpert

Here are pictures I used for a retrospective on the occasion of my mother's 75th birthday in 2001.

Waltraud Schmitt, born in Lindau, on June 17th, 1926.

1937, as BDM Maedchen. . .

Maedchenlyceum Lindau, the girls school, ca 1939.

As nurse during the war years, ca 1943.

After the war.

The University of Munich shortly after the war. Mom and Dad both came to study here. That's where they met.

But it would take some years, before

they realized they were meant for each other . . .

First Waltraud became a math teacher in Freising.

in Freising, ca 1955

Augsburg 1957

Waltraud and future sister-in-law Helga Goetz at the Lindau port in 1957.

Finally, after an `ice age', the wedding: July 28th 1957.

Mutti always maintained that she was not musical. Here is a valiant try at a trio of recorders. Inge Keil, a friend from college days, is the third musician. ca 1958.

Christmas 1958, in Augsburg, with Helmuts family. The first child is born, Ulrike.

Ulrike, now in Stockholm. Written on the back of this picture from early 1964, in Oma's handwriting: Wer ist diese Dirigentin? noch ist der Stab ein Sprungseil, vielleicht werden diese Patschhaendchen in wenigen Jahren einen richtigen Dirigentenstab fuehren? Mindestens den Geigenbogen.

That's me. In the 'boat'.

Maria laughs.

Elisabeth.

Back in Germany. Pentecost 1966. With Maria, Ulrike and me, in Lederhosen . .

Fasching 1971.

1975 in Saeben

1982, at the wedding of Ulrike und Thomas Rossmerkel.

August 1986. During the week before our wedding in Eugene, Oregon, my parents and `auntie' Ruth Grabau and Heewon's sister Hee-Young and her mom, took a wonderful trip to famous Crater Lake, Oregon.

During our wedding festivities, 16.August 1986. My mom with family friend Harvey Neufeld.

Another wonderful trip with my parents and in-laws. This time in the Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy. July 1990.

During the week before my graduation and the baptism of Hannah, August 12th 1989, we took a trip to the Oregon coast

Mutti, alles Gute zu Deinem 75ten Geburtstag!

The End.
